Rick Hess’ Mission 2025 Gaslight (Opinion)

To the Editor:

As a former particular training paraprofessional throughout COVID-19 and a present college board member liable for voting on budgets, I used to be disillusioned by “training coverage maven” Rick Hess’ flippant account of Mission 2025’s affect on colleges in his opinion essay “The Nice Mission 2025 Freakout” (July 19, 2024).

As a substitute of dedicating practically 25 % of an essay to a stroll down the conservative motion’s reminiscence lane (with references to Hess’ childhood ), I encourage Hess to defend coverage agendas by explaining coverage, not reactions. In discussing block grants, for instance, offering context for a way little federal cash goes to highschool districts is perhaps helpful.

Doing so would require analysis, and Hess repeatedly displaces precise evaluation of Mission 2025 insurance policies with “scorching takes” on Trump’s consciousness of Mission 2025, Miguel Cardona’s legacy, a JD Vance-like determine as a brand new training secretary, congressional majorities, and the U.S. Supreme Courtroom.

The essay’s subtitle says, “There’s nothing particularly scary within the Heritage Basis’s training agenda.” With out an account of the insurance policies, how would he know?

Fortunately, the Training Week article “Mission 2025 Would Dramatically Minimize Federal Funds for Faculties. Then What?” (July 22, 2024) offers the information that Hess omits, and I encourage readers to evaluate it.
